The Chocolay Township Office will begin Summer hours on Tuesday May 28th, 2019. 

Office hours will be 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, Monday thru Friday. 

Summer hours run from Memorial Day to Labor Day.

Postponement - ZB 19-09 Zoning Variance

The public hearing concerning a Zoning Variance on Parcel 52‑02‑109‑037‑00 scheduled for May 23, 2019 has been postponed until June 27, 2019 at 7 PM.

Kim and Carol Parker, property owners of the above parcel, wish to build a second story addition onto a structure located at 483 Lakewood Lane in the waterfront residential (WFR) zoning district that does not meet the current side setbacks of 10 feet for a legal conforming residence. The current setback for the existing structure is approximately 2 feet from the side lot line of the neighboring property at 481 Lakewood Lane.

A copy of the submitted application and related materials will be available for review and inspection at the Township office during regular business hours (Monday through Friday, 8 AM to 4:30 PM), and on the Township web site ( Written comments will be received until 12 PM June 19, 2019. Township Ordinance Adoptions


On May 13, 2019, the Chocolay Township Board moved to adopt and publish Ordinances #39 Waste Water Collection System, #65 Fireworks, #67 Marijuana Establishments, #68 Rentals and Zoning Ordinance amendment #34-19-04.

Ordinance #39 has been updated to change the billing due date for sewer bills to be the 25th day of the month. The changes to the ordinance will be in effect in time for the June billing cycle.

Ordinance #65 has been updated to change the times and dates fireworks are permitted to be discharged within the Township to match the discharge times and dates in current State law. The changes to the ordinance will be in effect immediately after publication.

Ordinance #67 has been enacted to prohibit marijuana establishments within the Township boundaries. The ordinance will be in effect seven days after publication.

Ordinance #68 has been enacted to establish regulations regarding rentals of registered dwellings in the Township. The ordinance will be in effect June 13, 2019.

Zoning Amendment 34-19-04 has been enacted to establish where registered rentals are permitted in the Township, and to correct language for setbacks. The language will be in effect June 13, 2019.

Copies of the adopted ordinances and Zoning Ordinance amendment language are available for review and inspection at the Chocolay Township Hall Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM and can also be viewed at The adopted ordinance and Zoning Ordinance language shall become effective as shown above, after legal publication and in accordance with the provisions of the Act governing publication. New Solid Waste Contract
There was a new solid waste contract awarded to Waste Management at the Chocolay Township Board meeting on Monday. This will become effective July 1, 2019. There was a letter mailed to Chocolay Township residents on Wednesday, May 15, 2019 detailing the many changes. Please take time to read this letter as these changes will affect all garbage collection. The letter can be viewed here

2019 Seasonal Load and Speed Restrictions - UPDATE
The Marquette County Road Commission has issued a Partial Lifting of Seasonal Weight Restrictions, please see below.

Beginning 7:00 AM on Monday, May 20, 2019, weight restrictions will be lifted on all roads south of U.S. 41 & M-28 and east of M-95. including all of Chocolay, Marquette, and Humboldt Townships. Weight restrictions will continue to apply and will be enforced on all other county roads and streets until further notice.

Township Information
In efforts to keep the Chocolay Township residents up-to-date on news happening in the Township, we are asking the residents to provide their name and address with an email and/or cell phone # for texts.
By doing this, residents would be informed of public hearings, road closures, projects and their updates and other important information regarding the Township. We are planning to implement this sometime in May.

You can also pick up a paper copy of the survey at the Township office.

Your response to the survey is needed, so please take the time to complete one. The survey will take about twenty minutes to complete.
